About Pehiāweri Ahuwhenua Trust

The Creation of  Pehiāweri B1B
Ahu Whenua Trust

The first whānau hui to discuss the whenua Pehiāweri B1B was held at Pehiāweri Marae on October 15, 2011. Whānau travelled from all over the motu to kōrero about the whenua and the vision for Pehiāweri B1B. Subsequently more whānau hui occurred in March, July, and October 2012. During this time foundations were set in place to investigate the formation of an Ahu Whenua Trust for Pehiāweri B1B. In 2012, 92 shareholders were identified of the 4162.5 total shares of which covered 16.845 hectares. The whenua is situated next to Pehiāweri Marae and we were able to hīkoi on the whenua when coming together for whānau hui at Pehiāweri Marae. Whānau have had the opportunity to hīkoi the whenua where our tūpuna once lived.

Pirini Kake the son of Kake Peru succeeded to the whenua and on his passing the whenua was passed on to his tamariki Henare Kake, Kahui Kake (only sister), Mauhaere Kake, Wiremu Kake, Haki Kake, Perepe Kake (no tamariki), and Toki Kake who had all lived on the whenua. A whare currently sits on the whenua owned by the descendants of Wiremu Kake. One of requirements from a whānau hui was to ensure the Trust included representation of the above six tūpuna pou. This requirement is constituted outcomes in the Trust Deed and the Trustees are constantly working towards having representation of all six tupuna pou on the Trust.

An interim committee was formed in 2012 to progress with moving forward with the main goal of constituting an Ahu Whenua Trust. Further hui were planned for March, July and November 2013 and whānau were invited to attend hui at Pehiāweri Marae. Hui encouraged whakawhanaungatanga, and provided a collaborative approach to the direction of Pehiāweri B1B. More importantly whānau had the opportunity to voice their whakaaro and contribute towards the goal and future direction of Pehiāweri B1B.

The year 2014 focussed on the mahi required to constitute an Ahu Whenua Trust. In March, August and September 2014 planning occurred for the application to be submitted before the Māori Land Court. Whānau attended a court hearing in September 2014 and March 2015 where the Judge approved the resubmitted application to constitute Pehiāweri B1B Ahu Whenua Trust. The whānau came together at Pehiāweri Marae in December 2016 to celebrate

the formation of Pehiāweri B1B Ahu Whenua Trust. Whānau again had the opportunity to hīkoi the whenua led by kaumātua, and attend hui to share information and progress of the Pehiāweri Ahu Whenua Trust. The Trustees continue to plan for the future of the whenua inclusive of beneficiaries and their whānau. Hui brings us together to share and plan the future together.
